Stump Grinding in Kissimmee

An old stump keeps causing trouble long after the tree is gone. We grind it below the soil line, deal with the surface roots that matter and leave a level, clean spot your lawn or garden can grow back into.

Finishing the job a tree removal started

Stump grinding uses a machine with a toothed cutting wheel to chip a stump down into small pieces, usually several inches below grade. The roots left underground slowly break down on their own, and the ground above can be filled, leveled and planted.

We treat it as care for the yard you already have. A stump that stays put tends to send up suckers, invite wood-boring insects and termites, and force mowers and string trimmers to work around it, which leaves ragged grass and scarred edges. Removing it protects the turf, the beds and the irrigation lines nearby.

Our company is family-owned and business licensed, and we have been doing this work in Kissimmee and nearby towns such as St. Cloud, Celebration and Hunters Creek since 2018.

What our stump grinding includes

Grinding below grade
We take the stump down below the soil line so grass or mulch can sit level over it. If you plan to plant a tree or shrub in the same spot, tell us and we grind deeper and wider.
Surface root work
Roots running just under the lawn can lift turf and catch a mower blade. We grind the exposed ones that would cause problems, not every root in the yard.
Chips handled your way
Grindings can be raked back into the hole, spread as rough mulch or hauled away. We talk through which suits the spot before we start.
Fill and level
Once the chips are cleared, we fill the hole with soil and level it so the spot does not sink into a soft dip after the first heavy rain.
Protecting what is nearby
We mark sprinkler heads and lines, shield nearby siding, windows and cars from flying chips, and use ground mats where the machine crosses the lawn.
Cleanup
Driveways, walks and beds are blown and raked clear before we leave.

Signs a stump is ready to go

  • New shoots keep appearing

Some trees, especially oaks and other hardwoods, push up sprouts from the stump and roots for years. Cutting them back only buys time.

  • Insects or soft, crumbling wood

Rotting stumps attract termites, carpenter ants and beetles. A stump close to your home is worth removing before it becomes a feeding ground.

  • Mowing around an obstacle

If you trim around a stump every week, the grass beside it stays patchy and the mower deck takes hits. Grinding gives you one clean surface again.

  • Roots lifting turf or pavers

Surface roots from an old stump can raise lawn, crowd sprinkler lines and nudge pavers out of line.

  • You want to replant the area

A new bed, a path or fresh sod cannot go down properly over a stump. Grinding is the first step toward using that space again.

What affects the cost of stump grinding

Every stump is priced on what we see during the walkthrough, and the estimate lists each one on its own line. You will know the total before the grinder ever arrives, and nothing is added once we start.

Diameter and species

Wider stumps take more passes. Dense hardwoods such as oak grind slower than softer wood or palm.

Getting the grinder in

Stumps behind a fence gate, down a tight side yard or on a slope need a compact grinder, and that work goes at a slower pace.

How far down we go

Clearing room for a new tree in the same spot means cutting below the usual depth. Chasing out a wide web of shallow roots also lengthens the visit.

Chip removal and fill

Hauling grindings away and bringing in topsoil costs more than leaving chips on site.

Number of stumps

Several stumps in one visit are more efficient than separate trips, and the estimate reflects that.

How a stump grinding visit runs

  1. 1

    Free on-site walkthrough

We look at each stump, its diameter, the roots around it and how a machine will reach it. You get a clear written estimate before any work is scheduled.

  2. 2

    Utility locate and prep

Before grinding, we request a utility locate through Florida's 811 system so buried lines are marked. On the day, we flag sprinkler heads and clear rocks or debris from around the stump.

  3. 3

    Grinding

The grinder works the stump down in passes, side to side, until it sits below grade. Most residential stumps take well under an hour each, though large oaks take longer.

  4. 4

    Fill, level and clean

We handle the chips the way we agreed, backfill with soil and leave the area raked level. If you want new grass there, our sod installation crew can finish the spot.

Stump grinding questions

Is grinding the same as stump removal?

Not quite. Grinding chips the stump below the surface and leaves the deeper roots to decay naturally. Full removal pulls the root ball out, which tears up much more of the yard. For most lawns and beds, grinding is the cleaner choice.

How soon can I lay sod or plant over the spot?

Once the chips are cleared and the hole is filled with soil, sod can usually go down right away. Wood chips left mixed in the soil can tie up nitrogen as they break down, so we recommend removing most of them where grass will grow.

Do you grind palm stumps?

Yes. Palm stumps are fibrous rather than woody and grind differently, but they still end up level and below grade. When the trunk has not been cut down yet, we handle that first through our palm tree pruning and removal work, then grind what remains.

Will the stump grow back after grinding?

Most stumps will not. A few vigorous species may push up a shoot or two from leftover roots; these are easy to cut back and usually stop within a season.

Will the grinder damage my sprinkler system?

We mark heads and known lines during the walkthrough and on the day. If a line runs right through the root zone, we tell you beforehand, and our irrigation work can reroute or repair it.

Can I spread the cost of a bigger yard project?

Yes. When stump grinding is one piece of a larger plan, such as new sod, beds or a patio, we can set up financing for amounts as high as $100,000. Terms run anywhere from two to twelve years, and paying the balance off early carries no penalty. We go over the details during your walkthrough.
